Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Titus Gorilla Family

Titus Gorilla Family was named after the dominant silverback Titus who was born in the days of Dian Fossey’s research at Karisoke research center. Titus was orphaned at a very young age when his father was killed by poachers and the rest of the family members were left to join other gorilla groups. Titus was left to be raised by different gorilla families in the park until it was fully grown to be a powerful dominant silverback.

Titus grew up with other male gorillas in a family headed by Beetsme and was lucky to be spared when Beetsme chased away most of the male gorillas and remained with Titus for security in the group. Titus later surprised Beetsme to challenge him and took over leadership of the group from 1991 to 2007 when he was also challenged by his son Kuryana to form his own family.

Titus finally died a natural death at the age of 35 and his legacy can be seen in his family as you watch their behavior. Titus Gorilla family was set apart for research but can also be tracked if there’s a scarcity of permits in the Volcanoes National park.

Cost of a Gorilla Permit

Gorilla permits are available in Rwanda at a cost of 1500USD per person and are available throughout the year. Our reservations team is ready to make all the preparations for you to meet these endangered apes in the republic of Rwanda. The permits in Rwanda are charged quite highly due to conservation purposes for the good of the mountain Gorillas in the forest.
