Golden monkeys are a rare primate species with gold-like far that explains their name Golden monkeys. Golden monkeys live in the Virunga mountains that spread across Rwanda, Congo, and Uganda’s Mgahinga. The Golden monkeys live in troops of 100 and are headed by an Alpha male. Golden monkeys have been habituated for tracking by the visitors and are available for tracking for all the visitors. Their gold-like color gives them an outstanding beauty that you can’t miss on your trip to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Feeding
Golden monkeys feed on Bamboo leaves, sprouts, fruits, flowers, lynches, and sometimes small invertebrates. They keep moving around the forest in search of these foods and lie for rest in the evening hours.
Golden monkey tracking
This involves going into the forest in search of habituated Golden monkey troops to learn about their daily lives in their natural habitat. Golden Monkey tracking starts with a briefing by the park headquarters and takes less time compared to gorilla tracking to meet them.
Visitors are allowed to spend 1 full hour with the monkeys as they take pictures and watch them play, feed and on a lucky day, you will watch them mate. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of the best places to do this activity since it also hosts the mountain Gorillas. Mgahinga is actually sometimes called the place where the Gold meets the silver.
Golden monkey tracking permits cost 50USD per person in Uganda and 100USD per person in Rwanda. Tracking permits can be booked on the ground at UWA offices in Kisoro district(Uganda). We are here to help you in case you need to watch these endangered primates.
