“Amahoro” is a Kinyarwanda word Meaning “peace”. The name Amahoro is demonstrated by the dominant silverback Ubumwe who tends to keep peace even in a time of losing some of the group members to other gorilla families. The calm nature of Ubumwe was used by the ambitious silverback in the group called Charles to take some females to start a new family called Umubano. The group lives in the slopes of mount Bisoke and can be tracked though it’s a bit difficult.
The members include 2 black backs, 5 female adults, 4 young ones and 5 juveniles. This brings their number to 17 headed by Ubumwe the dominant silver back.
The beauty about tracking such a family living in the most difficult places is that you will have a real adventure of the jungles and how exactly the gorillas live in these high Virunga volcanoes.
Cost of Gorilla permits in Rwanda
Gorilla permits cost 1500USD per person in Rwanda and can be acquired through a trusted travel agency in either Rwanda or Uganda.
When to book Gorilla permits
Gorilla permits can be booked at any time of the year since also tracking happens all year round. The best time however is the dry season also known as Peak season. Peak season normally runs between December to mid-March and June to September. The weather is very friendly and tracking of the gorillas is normally easy since you can move with less chances of rain.
The low season on the other hand is also another great time for tracking the Gorillas because you can always expect the sun to return to clear the weather even after a heavy down pour.
