WHAT TO DO IN AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK
Akagera National Park is a mainly savanna land covering over 25 sq.km located in the Eastern parts of Rwanda. The park gets its name from River Kagera that flows on the Eastern boundary of Rwanda. This great river flows directly into lake Ihema and other surrounding lakes. Akagera national park forms a large protected wetland with a large open savanna and lots of swamps. The park has great history to the exact establishment it has now after suffering a great loss of wildlife and trees to the human population especially in the 90’s when there was disaster of the Genocide and before.
The park has a lot of interesting activities to do and several things to see in your trip to this land of a thousand hills.
Game drives
Akagera park can best be explored on game drives to catch up with its diverse game including herds of Elephants, Buffaloes, Burchell Zebras, several antelopes, monkeys, lions, leopards and Rhinos among others. Enjoy great views of the park in the southern and northern parts of the park.
Nocturnal Game drives
The park harbors particular game that don’t move in the daylight or that may be hard to notice in the day light. Animals like leopards, hyenas, bush babies are more active in the night and are more noticeable.
Boat safaris
Another great activity to involve in during your trip to Akagera National Park is a boat ride on lake Ihema which can be booked on arrival. Lake Ihema boasts in the highest population of crocodiles in East Africa. Other game like Elephants and several water birds are seen along the shores of the lake.
Cultural excursions
You can also involve in a cultural tour experience in the Eastern Parts of Rwanda to discover the nature of these cattle keepers. Visiting the Kageyo cultural village will introduce you to things like the local milk pots used to store Milk. And again depending on the day you visit, you will have a chance to visit a lcal market and watch them auctioning their cows.
Birding in Akagera
This park is a real birder’s haven with a large number of bird species up 750 seen in one park. Look out for the rare shoebill stork, papyrus gonolek, raptors and several, migrant birds like the great sniper.
