About Nyakagezi Gorilla family
Nyakagezi Gorilla family is the only gorilla group living in the Mgahinga Gorilla Park in the south west of Uganda. The family was unstable at first as it crossed to the neighboring Rwanda and back to Mgahinga but later stabilized in Mgahinga. The family is led by a dominant silver back Mark who took over from Bugingo. Unlike others who leave the group to die in isolation or seek refuge in other gorilla groups after being overthrown, Bugingo stayed in the group up to now and believed to be 54 years. The number of individuals is now 9 after the recent birth of a new baby Gorilla by an adult female Nshuti in the group. The family has 3 silverbacks, 2 adult females, 1 Juvenile and 3 infants.
Nyakagezi settled in Mgahinga in 2012 due to the abundance of food in this park and has since stabilized and is now available for tracking. 8 gorilla permits are available every day for visitors and you wouldn’t want to miss an opportunity of visiting this historical gorilla group.
