There is a limit on how many people should visit a habituated Gorilla group at a time. The limit is for conservation purposes of the endangered mountain Gorillas in their natural homes- the forest. A group of 8 people is allowed to visit a gorilla family each day with the help of UWA researchers. The number of 8 people is selected after briefing on the tracking day. The basis of the selection varies from the level of fitness, age, special interest groups like the lame and expectant mothers, and also interests.
You will then be led into the forest with Uganda Wildlife Authority staff to search for the habituated gorilla family allocated to you. Each gorilla family is only visited once a day to allow them have their time in the forest.
Why only 8 people?
- It is believed that a large group of people is a cause for stress to the gorillas that are used to stay in the forest alone. This was resolved by a team of researchers as they sought the best way to conserve the Gorillas.
- A group of more than 8 people may also be a threat to a gorilla family as it may sometimes become hard to avoid surrounding the Gorillas which makes them feel threatened and may react.
- Maintain low tones may sometimes be hard for a larger group since sometimes the guide may need to explain to the entire group at ago. A smaller group is easily manageable by the leading team of researchers.
Where to get Gorilla tracking permits
Gorilla permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). This is the only government body that is allowed to issue Gorilla permits to travelers. The permits can be acquired through a trusted local travel agency like us at Gorillaland Safari Holidays. The permits cost 700USD for Non-residents, 600USD for foreign residents and 250,000UGX for East African Citizens.
Gorilla permits are sometimes on a high demand that you are required to book it months before your travel date. The peak season between November to February and June to September is normally so busy and getting permits is sometimes hard requiring you to book 3-6 months before your travel date. The low season is also another busy time though not like the peak season. Travelers must book in time to avoid missing on this impressive experience meeting with the habituated mountain Gorillas.
