Lake Mulehe

As Uganda has more wildlife and culture, nature is also one that makes Uganda the pearl of Africa, with numerous lakes, hills, plateaus and valleys. Just like other lakes – Mutanda and Bunyonyi, Lake Mulehe is located in southwestern Uganda between Kisoro and Rushaga trekking route in Bwindi National Park.

The lake is believed to have formed by a volcanic eruption that occurred many years ago and the lake is surrounded by spectacular hills that are terraced. The lake covers an area of 2 square kilometers as surface area and 14 kilometers wide.

ACTIVITIES ON LAKE MULEHE.

The lake is home to different interesting activities that a tourist can enjoy while on a Uganda safari;

Canoeing or boat cruise.

For the visitors who would like to visit the islands and explore the beautiful lake, canoeing or boat cruise is the best option. You should allocate more time to be able to spend at least 3 hours while sailing on this lake. Remember while canoeing, local boats are used and we recommend engaging on canoes than the engine boats to have a much better traditional experience.

Fishing.

Fishing is done using local boats where visitors join local fishermen to head for their daily job. Fishermen understand the best fishing spots that you will enjoy. The lake has both catfish and Nile tilapia that can be enjoyed later as lunch or early dinner. For the best adventure, you will use the traditional methods of fishing like using hooks and baskets.

Birding.

Lake Mulehe boasts a descent population of birds and these can be explored either while canoeing or walking around the lake. Birds that can be spotted include kites, kingfishers, hadada ibis, and the grey crowned crane among others. Birds spotted around are both water and mountain birds since the lake is surrounded by hills.

Cultural encounters.

The lake is surrounded by the Bakimbiri people with unique cultures and visiting their community will reward your adventure by enjoying activities like cultural music and dances, meal tasting and learning handcraft and understand wholly the lifestyle of Bakimbiri people. Also, during this community walk you’ll see traditional ways of building houses, farming practices among others.

Swimming.

As the lake has freshwaters which are bilharzia, crocodile and hippo free, swimming can safely take place. The fresh calm waters that are relatively deep favors this experience.

Relaxing/chilling.

You can take a day experience while relaxing on the lake shores watching over the sunrise and sunset, you may even choose to sip some beer or juice or even a cup of coffee while watching over the waters and the surrounding terraced landscape.

Hiking.

Lake Mulehe is surrounded by undulating Kigezi hills, you can choose to take a hike and enjoy an aerial view of the lake. Hiking is good for the body as well as taking in the rewarding gorgeous sceneries. During the hike, you can pass through the nearby homes, spot some birds and take amazing pictures.

Cycling.

For tourists who like mountain biking or cycling, here there’s an opportunity where you will be able to visit local communities as you enjoy the surrounding landscape. The trails are well demarcated by expert guides and they offer the best photographic points. For those without Mountain bikes, our experts are ready to hire some for you as long as you book this experience in advance.

Gorilla trekking.

You can head out for gorilla trekking in Bwindi National Park or Mgahinga national park where you will spend an hour in the presence of magical gorillas but the whole experience takes about 2 to 7 hours. While on the trek, you can spot other primates, birds and vegetation among others.
